Indecisiveness
I am such an indecisive person as of late. I'm currently attending U of L to work on my bachelors of education and I'm taking an education prep class this semester. Well a couple of weeks ago they brought in representatives from the two main employers of teachers in this area: Jefferson County Schools and OVEC (Ohio Valley Education Commission). Well they started out their presentation not with a pep talk but with spirit killing set of facts. There is no such thing a a teacher shortage in this area. In fact they have so many applicants in this area that it is difficult to find a job. For every position that opens in the school districts that OVEC controls there are 30+ qualified applicants. For every position that open in Jefferson County district there are 10-15 qualified applicants. They also told us that we would need to specialize in as many fields as possible because the chances of us getting hired in the field of study that we want is slim to none. This is especially true for art, music, or other specialty teachers (my focus is theater arts). You may wait 15 or more years to get a position in a non-traditional field because people get these positions and do not leave them. Its just frustrating to think that I may spend 6-7 working on a double major in theater and education and may not get to use it for many years. So I've been leaning back toward entering the nursing field. I just hate not know exactly where I'm going. I'm one of those people who always has a plan. I've been looking into the nursing programs in the area. U of Ls nursing program is too competitive for my taste. You need to have a 4.0 to get in. There are currently 28,000 undergrads at U of L. Their nursing program only accepts 60 students a semester. The nursing program at U of L is more competitive than their doctorate program! So now I'm thinking of leaving U of L either this spring or next fall to transfer to a private nursing college in the area. The cost is outrageous ($15,000 for one year!) but the curriculum is tough (I'm coasting through my classes at U of L with little effort and it's frustrating some days) and from what I've heard from friends who have graduated they are more prepared than people who have graduated with a bachelors at U of L. There are just so many things to consider at the moment. Its overwhelming...
